"Calm, respectful and professional approach at A&E York Hospital ."

About: York Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

At 3am on Monday morning I was admitted to York Hospital A&E with chest pains, breathlessness and severe giddiness.

On entry to Reception I was immediately admitted to the unit and given the first of two ECGs, with an hour between each to monitor my progress. I was initially seen by a male nurse called (I think) Ash, who was polite and reassuring.

I recall feeling reassured that all staff seemed to use their first names on introduction, which makes the whole situation less intimidating. Despite my panic at my condition, I was appreciative of the fact that the unit gave the impression of being calm and orderly.

I then met a female registrar called Anna, who listened attentively to my tale of woe and gave me a thorough and respectful examination. She had also seen the ECG results. She decided I should have bloods taken, informed me it would take about 35 minutes for the results to return, and indeed that proved to be the case. Anna then discussed these results with me and we concluded, with the ECG results also being good, that I could return home.

In conclusion, this proved to be one of the scariest experiences of my life, but it was alleviated considerably by the calm, respectful, professional approach of the staff at York A&E Dept in the early hours of the morning.

Thank you very much.
