I didn't realise there was this type of hospital available until I found myself at the bottom of a big, dark hole telling my GP I was thinking of killing myself. Not something I ever thought I would be talking about. The crisis team were in contact that same day, very soon calling to see me and not only supporting me but also my wife. When you are ill yourself (its not something you consider how deeply others around you feel it too). Having them there for both of us to talk to face to face, and by telephone was invaluable. I will still be seeing the primary care team in the future to help me cope, but without that interim contact I am sure I would not be on the road to a normal life again.
What should change? ? Nothing, except more services like this. I am sure during cutbacks everything has to be assessed as 'value for money'. This is one service that should, and must be, safe guarded as a valuable resource.
