Being a Mental Health patient I have been disturbed by the number of Health professionals who seem to disregard patients.

I have had 3 Strokes and suffer from severe migraine attacks which sometimes require visits to the A&E, at these times I and my family frequently get told that, there is nothing wrong, mental patients when feeling unwell just need the attention.

On one of these occasions I was sent home only to have a stroke a few days later, health professionals need to understand to at times put aside the mental health of the patient and actually diagnose the real physical illness's that people have.

I was sorry to hear of your strokes and the lack of understanding you have received from health professionals.

You might know that there is a link between migraine and stroke. You may have a slightly increased risk of stroke if you have certain types of migraine. It can also be difficult to tell the difference between stroke and migraine when the symptoms are happening. Unless you have other risk factors as well, you are still very unlikely to have a stroke if you suffer from migraines. However, risk factors and stroke symptoms should always be taken seriously, especially if you have had strokes before. Our factsheet ‘Migraine and stroke’ has some more information about this.
