"Painful"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

What I liked

Nothing. This hospital should be demolished. Awful awful place. The majority of the staff I have dealt with are overweight, slow moving and rude. So many of them are wearing dirty and creased uniforms - hardly instilling any faith in the hygiene of th eplace - and stand around chatting. The car park queue is totally ridiculous, as is the booking in queue within the main entrance.

What could be improved

I waited 45 minutes to see the consultant although there was a clear note on his door saying "running on time"

I was attending with my daughter, who had been referred by my GP to a specialist at Lordswood Health Centre, who in turn referred her to the hospital with concerns about my daughter's condition. The expert she had seen in Lordswood was incredibly thorough and referred us to the consultant for the purpose of an MRI scan. During the consultant appointment my daughter was barely questioned or examined and within less than 5 minutes the consultant appeared to be trying to end our consultation. With my vast previous experience of Medway Hospital I refused to accept this and instead questioned and disagreed with his diagnosis. Initially he told us the x-ray was fine and then when pushed confirmed that the film did in fact show some abnormality. At this point he advised he would refer her for an MRI scan although this appointment will take between 6 - 8 weeks to come through.

Anything else?

I want to change consultants because when we do finally get the MRI results I certainly do not want to see the same consultant.

Why is everything a such a struggle with Medway? I have no faith in the place at all and if given a choice I would go to Maidstone Hospital instead.

I am very sorry to read that you have been disappointed with your visit to Medway orthopaedic outpatients. Outpatients’ clinics are very well utilised and we do see a great deal of satisfied patients, however, it would appear on this occasion there have been some problems noted. Our infection control scores for the area concerned, and the Trust as a whole, are at a very high standard and our infection rates are extremely low.

We have a very strict uniform policy and I am concerned that you observed creased and/or dirty uniforms. In my experience that is not what we would see on a daily basis or expect to see. I will ask the clinical lead nurse to spot check the orthopaedic area to ensure that standards are being kept to.

We will also remind staff that communicating overrunning clinics to patients waiting is important. Keeping patients informed is very important and I do apologise that the information you were given was that clinics were running to time, when they were clearly running late.

There are some other concerning issues you have brought up that can only be answered if we have some more information from you. If you could get in touch we would like the opportunity to discuss these matters with you.
