"Upset by care after an operation on my prostate"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital (Orpington) Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Urology The Royal London Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

The anaesthetist was great. The surgeon was fine.

My dfficult experience was back on the ward. It felt like I was "dumped" and forgotten. The procedures that were "done" to me were not explained and I was made to feel I was a nuisance for trying to engage any nurse in conversation. I was frightened by the huge blood clots and bladder washes that nobody explained. I felt so sick most of the time.

Three nurses told me "we have a policy to cover up" when my hospital gown failed to cover important areas. I found this so humiliating. A doctor stood at the foot of my bed and talked about me to a nurse. At no stage did either of them acknowledge me. I had to ambush another passing young doctor in a rush and beg her to answer some of my questions.

The air unit was faulty and screamed and clanked preventing any sleep. In the end, I thought there maybe was something wrong with me as nurses seemed to ignore me or maybe not realise I was there. The worst bit was the agony when the catheter was ripped out with no warning.

I was thoroughly traumatised and frightened by the whole experience.
