What I liked

I accompanied my friend to the A&E Dept at TGH today. She was seen quickly - despite the Dept appearing to be quite busy and we were soon on our way.

What could be improved

On our way out of the Dept we had to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke from the people that were smoking outside (I am asthmatic and cigarette smoke makes me wheezy), we walked up to the front entrance to the Hartshead building and to get in the entrance we had to, once again, walk though a cloud of cigarette smoke. We had tea and toast (1st class by the way) in physio tea bar and then left to get the bus. Both back outside the Hartshead building and at the bus stop there were people smoking. One person actually blew it in my face and tutted when I wafted it away. I though the whole site was a designated no smoking area? Why is more not done to enforce this?

Anything else?

Please do more to enforce the no smoking ban - can only be good for peoples health and the image of TGH when there aren't a load of cigarette ends everywhere

Thank you for your positive comments regarding the A&E Department.

We do endeavour to promote good health by having a policy which does not allow smoking in both our buildings and in the grounds.

This is enforced with staff by a No Smoking Policy and to visitors, patients and public by signage, a tannoy system at entrances and through our patient handbook.

Unfortunately, the patients and public continue to apply the national smoking legislation which does allow people to smoke outdoors. This is a problem for many hospitals and at TGH we continue to remind the public and patients that the rules are different on site, this is done by tasking the parking officers and security officers to monitor these areas and by and large the public do respond when this happens.
