"Seeking Help Over Weak Bladder Control"

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary / Urology Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Continence advisory service

(as the patient),

I recently visited the Continence clinic after a friend, who recommended this service, made me my first appointment.

The advisor who I was seen by was very friendly and approachable which made it easy to talk about problems despite their intimate nature. She took the details of my problem and did an examination and as a result of this she gave me helpful advice about Pelvic Floor Exercises (PFE), changes to lifestyle (cutting out tea and coffee and ensuring a fibre-rich diet) and she prescribed a course of treatment. She also offered a range of medical aids to help to cope at home, the most helpful of these being a supply of protective pads. She also asked me to keep a diary, recording intake and output of liquid.

She got me an appointment with a Urogynaecology Consultant, an ongoing service. Since then I have had two further appointments with the Continence Advisor which have equally satisfied my needs and altogether been successful. Because of the ongoing follow up by the Consultant I no longer need to regularly see the Continence Advisor, however she will keep in touch to asses my ongoing needs on an annual basis and I have contact details for the service if I need further advice or support.

I only required three appointments with the Continence Advisor but found the service provided very impressive and would happily recommend it to anyone in the same situation.
