"Some poor nursing care in Tailgate ward East Surrey hospital"

About: East Surrey Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My uncle was recently admitted to the ward in a very poor condition. He was in a side room and made to be comfortable as he was in such a critical condition. When my mother called on Sat morning to ask how he was doing the nurse said he was great doing well and up and about. This was obviously not the case and when my mother challenged her and explained he was sick, the nurse became defensive and said "well I don't know all the patients".

He then passed away that evening and my family found out through a friend as the hospital did not call them. My parents were always his next of kin and my mother gave them their numbers to contact them at anytime and this did not happen.

I have worked at east surrey as a nurse and am not overly surprised at the poor care on some of the wards. It's a shame because the nurses that work hard do not get any gratitude.

There was no accountability for any of their actions they just seemed to blame each other I really pray this never happens to them or their families.

Dear Jf

Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your Uncle and for the experience you and your family had with the ward. Clearly this is not acceptable and will be taken up with our Chief Nurse to address with the ward in question. If you would like to provide further information please contact Sally Brittain on email: sally.brittain@sash.nhs.uk or tel: 01737 231825.
