"Excellent response to bowel screening alert"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I sent a bowel sample in Feb 2012 to the screening unit in SE England. In two days I was sent a letter saying that there was something which needed further checking, along with an appointment for about 3 days later to go to the screening unit in Treliske Hospital.

I was treated very courteously, received a clear explanation of why there might be a problem and the procedure for an endoscopy of the colon. There was every opportunity to ask questions. I was given a preparation kit which I needed to take before the procedure which was scheduled about a week later. It was easy to follow.

The procedure was carried out with gentleness and courtesy and very little discomfort, and a preliminary report was given. Absolutely amazing that this was all done within 2 weeks of the screening test!

The staff forgot to tell me about the aftercare, which I found on the back of the results sheet 48 hours later (unless my memory was switched off at that time!). It would have been helpful to have shared these with the person who picked me up.

The follow-up by phone was exemplary - I felt that my situation was important.
