"Friendly staff but more information needed from Barnsley District General"

About: Barnsley Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I was a patient at the Barnsley District General hospital in December of last year for the removal of a cataract. I was pleased with the friendliness of the staff, who made me feel at ease before my operation.

However, the operation itself did not go so well. Apparently, an instrument pierced my pupil, causing a haemorrhage at the back of my eye. After the operation, I was not told what to expect - I still wasn't able to see clearly for 5 weeks after the operation.

The other problem which needs some attention is the pharmacy. I was given a choice to either wait for eye drops (which I was told could take hours!), or to go back in for them later in the evening. In the end my daughter had to go back later to collect them, but this was difficult in itself, as there is so little parking in and around the hospital.
