"Entirely positive."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

What I liked

I am a BUPA subscriber and was referred by my GP to the Mottistone Suite for a gastroscopy. I arrived anxious, having heard friends describe the moment during the procedure when you want to gag and can feel yourself choke. I therefore asked the consultant for the maximum sedation available. When the moment came, however, there was no sensation whatsoever and the whole thing was over in five minutes. It was less intrusive than a visit to the dentist! I feel this was entirely due to the skill and care of the two nurses and the attending consultant. They were responsive to me, gentle and reassuring and I got the impression that they liked being there and doing their job. Afterwards, the consultant came to tell me what he'd found and again was totally reassuring. My worries drained away. Back in the ward, I was offered a choice of meals and drinks and was allowed to leave shortly after. The ward staff were friendly and kind.
