"absolutely disgusting care discharging my sister..."

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

What I liked

My sister was a sent to a medical ward as there were no beds on the rehab ward, she contacted another uti as she was not showered regularly and was unable to walk because of her first uti that she was admitted with, However the physio on the ward was good and they had her walking a little, she was then transfered to ward six which was an excellent ward where patients came first her care was very good and the phyisotherapy was excellent. When a bed became available on ward 23 a rehab ward the family were delighted However she was put in a room on her own and received no stimulation the physiotherapist was unable to get my sister to walk as she had another uti and when she was asked if she would stand up she said no I told the staff that she was confused and that the physios on the other wards didnt ask her they just said come along and helped her up. The physio said that if she refused to do what she was asked it would be abuse to make her stand. So that my sister was discharged not walking, she was walking with help before her uti. Also whilst visiting her she wanted to go to the toilet she rang her nurse call bell and it wasnt answered for 40 minutes. the care on the ward was very bad. she was treated much better on ward 6 and on the medical ward. If she had stayed on ward six I am sure she would be walking now.. It was abuse to discharge her not walking

What could be improved

The rehab wards need more experienced physios. and the nurses need more education on how to treat confused patients and how it is important that they receive stimulation whilst in hospital. I am a nurse and was disgusted at the care my sister received, you couldnt call it care. I think that psychiatric nurses are needed on the ward to educate the nurses and physios on how to deal with confused patients
