"Facilities for end of life care at St Helier Hospital"

About: St Helier Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My father was admitted to this hospital in mid 2010 and died there a few weeks later of Pneumonia and Dementia. He was 85 and had been in decline for a long time.

He spent his last days on a general ward and there appeared to be no facilities for moving dying patients into a more suitable setting where relatives could spend time with their loved one in peace and quiet. It was also July and the ward was stifling. As far as I could tell the basic medical needs of my father were met and the Doctors seemed to deal with his condition correctly but on some visits some nurses seemed indifferent and far from caring whilst others were superb.

I think that more weeding out of unsuitable nurses should take place if they cannot demonstrate the right human qualities for the job and that the hospital should make facilities available for End of Life Care which provide a temperature controlled and more private environment for the patient and family.
