"Unhappy with daughter's care at A&E"

About: Yeovil District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My GP suggested that I took my 17 yr old daughter in to A &E in Yeovil due to severe pain in her right side lower back area.

By the time I had completed the 30 minute drive she was struggling to keep her eyes open and said she could not feel her legs. I rushed into the hospital and she was helped into A&E by a very lovely paramedic who fetched a wheel chair for her. Two and half hours later she had still not been given any pain killers despite being doubled over in pain and it was another hour before we saw a doctor.

Doctor gave her a lecture about her weight which was really unhelpful as she suffers from CFS and her paediatrician at Yeovil Hospital is fully aware of her health issues and she has lost a stone in the last 5 weeks through slimming world. They took a urine sample in which there was blood present and sent that off to the lab.

Still in excruciating pain they sent her home with more antibiotics even though she had just finished two weeks of antibiotics (one for a urine infection and one for a chest infection which followed directly after). They did prescribe some Tramadol for the pain but that was it, no further tests or anything despite us explaining that she had been having urinary tract infections etc for the past 18 months.

Now, four days on, she is still at home and taking tramadol every four hours. Lab results are back and show no infection so GP thinks that it is likely to be kidney stones. What I would like to know is why the hospital didn't keep her in when her pain was that bad?

We now have to wait for a urology referral and in the meantime she is feeling very unwell and without the tramadol would be in the same level of pain as she was when we went to A&E on Tuesday morning. If it is kidney stones then she has not managed to pass them in four days so who else do I need to scream at before my daughter's pain is dealt with?

Yeovil District Hospital is sorry that this family are unhappy with the care their daughter received in our A&E Department. We are not able to discuss individual cases publicly as this would be a breach of patient confidentiality. So it would really help us to resolve their concerns if they contacted our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01935 384706 as soon as possible.
