"My Mum's recent admission to hospital"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Acute assessment unit Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Day Surgery Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General medicine Scottish Ambulance Service / Ambulance Control Centre

(as a relative),

My Dad phoned me one afternoon and said "Your Mum's not right", I went round in a panic and found her shaking uncontrollably, nauseous and confused. I dialled 999 and asked for an ambulance. Within 15 minutes the ambulance arrived and the two person crew checked my Mum over and found enough to admit her to hospital in a hurry with suspected sepsis. It was a relief to see my Mum in the care of calm assured healthcare professionals who also had to reassure my Dad who's 91 and pretty deaf.

Mum was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital emergency department and from there was admitted to the acute assessment unit then ward A12 and lastly Day Surgery to await discharge. Without exception the nursing and clinical staff were excellent, caring and understanding.  I must also include Serco portering staff who helped me get a wheelchair for my Dad and domestic staff who were all lovely to my Mum. We met one porter in particular several times during the 6 days Mum was in hospital and he spoke to me and Dad very time he saw us. Mum was diagnosed as having blood poisoning and I felt I had enough information about Mum's progress and treatment. The Nurse in Day Surgery made sure to talk in person to the local district nurse service the day after Mum was discharged to ensure they were aware of Mum's ongoing needs. With the district nurse's help Mum has been issued with mobility aids and equipment to help in the home to support her recovery.

Dear Sharyn Defender,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback on Care Opinion. I am so sorry to read that your parents and yourself had reason to use our services. I am glad that your dad phoned you as Sepsis can move very quickly, particularly if the infection is in the blood. This must have been a very stressful time for all of you.

I would be very grateful if we could pass on comments to the crew and let them read your kind comments. Would you be able to email my team at scotamb.feedback@nhs.net with your mothers details, (name, address) and the date and rough time the vehicle attended. Would you be able to reference your care opinion username also so it can be linked to this story.

I hope that your mother is on the road to a full recovery and I would like to wish you all the very best.

Kind Regards

Alan
