"Lectured and shamed by the admissions office"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Dermatology

(as a service user),

I had to call up to re-arrange an appointment I had been sent by letter. This is because I travel for work and will not be in the area at the time of the appointment (which I was only given 3 days notice for).

The person that answered the phone then proceeded to shout at me, telling me how serious my problem is and that I shouldn't be prioritising my work over my health. I asked them to stop speaking to me in such a horrible manner but was ignored. They then said I have to be seen this month because my cancer could be getting worse! (Note: I am only getting a mole removed as a precaution, the doctor gave me the option to not get it removed and just observe it as it is in a grey area). The lecture went on for a long time before they agreed to cancel my appointment, but said if I cancel again then I will be removed from the clinic. I was left in floods of tears after being panicked about my health and shamed for not being able to attend! Due to no fault of my own.

My mother then called back because she was upset about how upset I was. This person then proceeded to speak to her about my case (after asking no personal questions beyond my name) and spoke to her in the same way, and mentioned my 'cancer' again.

The doctor I had my first appointment with went to great lengths to assure me that this procedure was routine and that I shouldn't panic, so for the word cancer to be thrown around so freely by this member of staff was seriously disturbing. I am left feeling very upset, panicked and not wanting to return to the hospital. I can't believe people speak to their patients like this!
