"Waiting times for hip replacement"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d)

(as a service user),

I am under Glasgow and Clyde health board which I feel has not been fit for purpose, I waited over a year for a back operation which I received in June 2018  as I could not walk properly , I didn’t get much better after my operation I had both sides done ,

at the beginning of October 2018 I saw a back doctor who referred me to see a hip doctor. when I made enquiries about waiting times to see the hip doctor I was told it could be a year or more before I would see anyone. I could not walk properly and needed help. I made a complaint to the nhs and eventually got a appointment for April 2019 , the surgeon that done my back operation I saw again in March 2018. This surgeon told me I needed a hip replacement and if they could they would give me one ASAP but they are not a hip surgeon, and asked me when I was seeing a hip doctor. I advised I was seeing another surgeon at the end of April 2019 , my back surgeon said they would write to the next one and ask to put me on to the hip replacement waiting list.

when I saw my new surgeon at the end of April I was told I could not be put on the waiting list as they had not seen me but would put me in now that was  April 2019. I went for a pre op appointment in August 2019 I have no date for my hip replacement have been told the pre op date lasts for three months and when I get a op date it can be cancelled at the last minute, I have no hope at all.

I am in constant pain, don’t sleep at night, can’t walk without aid, don’t eat properly, don’t socialise. when I do have a sleep it’s for a hour at a time and I don’t want to wake up my gp has been so good but three is only so many tablets you can take , l have contacted my local snp which were not much help telling me to go back to my doctor and as my back surgeon told me I am not getting any benefit from my back op needing a hip replacement is putting more strain on my back I can’t go on like this any more the feeling is hopeless.

I can’t remember what it is like not to have pain , I want a life not to live in pain and uncertainty all the time. If people can’t get free health care or operations in England, seems like they can come to Scotland and get care , I have lived here all my life and can’t get what I should be entitled to how does that make sense? something is wrong some were I need help I can’t go on for much longer I was also told I need my other hip replaced no end of suffering in sight

Dear Please Help Me Walk Again

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. I was sorry to hear that you have been having a very difficult time and that you are in such pain.

I have shared your feedback with the Management Team responsible for Orthopaedics. Regrettably our Orthopaedic Department has been experiencing extended waiting times There are a number of factors which are impacting on our ability to meet the national waiting times guarantee. We would wish to assure you that we are making every effort to reduce the waiting times for our patients.

Can I suggest that you discuss with your GP about how much pain you are experiencing and the impact this is having on your quality of life. Your GP will be able to provide a clinical update to your consultant or explore if there is anything further that can be done to help manage your symptoms whilst waiting for surgery.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Good morning Nicole

thank you so much for your reply. my GP has been so good, they had to refer me and send X-ray to the Orthopaedic department at the end of last year and the beginning I’d this year to get me a appointment to see a surgeon or I would have had to wait till October this year to get a appointment. a year to see the surgeon that is what I was told, I am on a lot of tablets pain killers, antidepressants with pain relief, tablets to help me sleep the pain is that bad I can only sleep for a very short time there is only so many tablets the doctor can give me.

I can’t walk on my own, I was told in March this year I am putting a terrible strain on my back waiting for this hip replacement and also I need my other one replaced as well, as I have other health problem which can’t be addressed as I need to prioritise. There just seems no hope or end to the pain I suffer all the time my doctor can’t give me any thing else, this situation is terrible with no end in sight before I had my back operation at my pre op I was given a date for surgery this is not the case now I just have to is and suffer.

thank you for your kind thoughts

kind regards
