"Broken Ankle"

About: Salisbury District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I fainted on a train travelling from Exeter to Clapham Junction with the result that I broke my right ankle. The train pulled into the next station which was Salisbury and I was transported to Salisbury Hospital. I didn't have to wait very long in A&E and was seen to quickly. The staff were very caring and attentive & made me feel at ease. I was on my own with no family or friends with me. They explained every stage in the treatment. I was whisked off to a lovely single room with a lovely view of Salisbury Cathedral. The doctor explained I would be having an operation next morning as I had broken my ankle in 2 places.

Next morning I was whisked into the operating theatre where the orthopaedic team introduced themselves to me which put me at my ease. I woke up in my room with no pain or any after effects. The nursing care was wonderful and the nurses were caring and attentive. They took time to chat with me and even shared a few jokes.

The food was delicious and the menu provided was very varied & a lot of the meals were freshly cooked.I especially enjoyed the soups. I stayed for 6 days in the hospital and I then went home to Croydon.

9 weeks on and I am making amazing progress. I am walking unaided but not walking very far or for very long. I am so very grateful to the surgeon & his team who operated on me (16th July). He did a wonderful job as I never had to take pain killers and am walking without pain. The team did an amazing job and I can't thank them enough. This is the NHS at its best .
