"Lots of visits"

About: Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

I have been in and out of QA and Gosport war memorial for many years.

I have received exceptional standards of care from everyone working at gosport war memorial. As someone who is in the healthcare profession, I felt as though everyone was considerate of not only my physical health, but my mental health at the time. I felt as if I was the most important patients in the ward with the way the nurses spoke to and treated me. Which is exactly what I needed at the time. I also went to gosport war memorial with sepsis! Thinking it was a small infection. The nurses were extremely professional and diligent. Explaining everything to me (even though at the time nothing was making sense!!) they were so compassionate and considerate, again - felt as though they had all the time in the world even though I’m sure I was extremely inconvenient to them showing up with such an illness!

However, suffering with chronic self injurious behaviour, whenever I have been told/advised to take a trip to QA a&E I have been treated with complete hostility... even being told I should “just not do it at all” after explaining why I needed stitches. Being told I should “just put moisturiser” on a very badly mattress stitched and infected wound (no antibiotics involved... this is just before I developed sepsis!!!) or being questioned by unqualified (in mental health) nurses asking why I did it and what treatment I expected “from coming here all the time”. I’ve got thick skin when it comes to my SH and MH but when a care based professional in the same bracket as my profession will effectively question why I’m wasting there time; rolling their eyes and asking questions in an extremely heartless and intolerant tone made my mental health spiral even more, to the point where I walked away from a triage because of the rudeness of the nurse about the situation I was in.

I’m not stereotyping the nurses at QA, because I understand not only are they very busy, and also swap between QA and GWM, but my treatment at QA was below par and I have complained about it on NHS feedback and even to psychiatrists to no avail, but every nurse and nurse practitioner I’ve come into contact with at GWM have been incredible. And I would highly recommend visiting them for any “minor injury” need. My partner and I still visit gosport since moving to hamble. The drive is worth the empathetic and compassionate treatment we get there.

Thank you for your valued feedback. I was pleased to read your kind words regarding the care you have received at Gosport War Memorial hospital over the years, however I am sorry that this has not also been the case at Queen Alexandra Hospital's Emergency Department.

If you would like to discuss these concerns in further detail, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0800 917 6039 or by e-mail at PHT.PALS@porthosp.nhs.uk and let them know what has happened so they can look into things for you.

Best wishes

Lisa
