"my experience of community ot"

About: Edgware Community Hospital / Neurological Rehabilitation Centre

(as a service user),

I am writing about the outstanding care I have received from Laura the community OT who visited me at home following a request from the National Hospital for Neuro surgery.

I was seen at the hospital in the spasticity clinic. I showed them a rash I have been suffering from for several weeks. They immediately got in touch with the OT team at Edgeware Hospital to see me at home. Laura arrived at my home and immediately I felt her deep care and concern. Her warmth and kindness radiated from her. I showed her the rash and she made several very helpful suggestions including seeing my GP urgently for treatment and diagnosis.

We discussed how it may be caused by pressure from sitting all the time on my scooter and she immediately ordered me a cushion to ease pressure sores. We looked at my stairs and she took photos and ordered stronger hand rails and extended the area that needed rails so I will be safer climbing the stairs. Finally she ordered me a new recliner that offers greater comfort for pressure sores. All this was done with such upmost kindness and humanity. She made me feel that she had all the time in the world to talk with me about my needs. Nothing was too much trouble. I felt deeply cared about.

All the things she provided and ordered came within a few days. I can now walk up the stairs without fear of falling, I can sit so much more comfortably on my scooter, and I can rest in my recliner without the terrible rash causing me discomfort. Today she returned and she looked at the rash and I felt her genuine sympathy. We discussed where I was at in my journey of solving the rash with my GP. She watched me climb my stairs and was so pleased and excited for me at my progress. Love flows from Laura. She is an exceptional OT and I have been left with not only excellent advice, equipment I vitally needed, but above all a sense of being cared about by an expert.
