"Mammogram procedures"

About: NHS Grampian / North East Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as the patient),

Mid way through my mammograms, after the third plate, the radiographer examined the plate closely then immediately  asked if I had a clinical appointment and said that I should receive a letter within two weeks.

I was given the impression that the radiographer had seen something untoward. They then completed my mammograms.

I am now anxious and must remain so for two weeks until I receive the letter.

It would have been easy to tell me about the feedback process at the beginning or even at the end without causing me alarm.

We all feel anxious about annual checks after cancer treatment.

Dear Sunflower 50

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Mammography on Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear that your appointment at the mammography clinic has left you feeling anxious. The mammographer has to check each image taken for technical quality and, at times, this can require closer examination. For example if the image is blurred it would have to be repeated to ensure a clear picture can be interpreted and reported. It is not the role of the mammographer to diagnose the findings. I have discussed your post with the superintendent radiographer. She will share with her team that the conversation around clinic appointments should take place when all images have been taken, as would usually happen.

I apologise for the alarm this has caused at your annual check following cancer treatment, when you are already feeling anxious.

Kind Regards

Margaret Meredith

Nurse Manager
