"Poor time management, communication and..."

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / Accident and emergency

I recently had to attend north staffs with my partner after a motorcycle accident, We arrived by car and went straight to A&E where we were seen pretty quickly. We saw a trauma consultant who advised my partner be seen in majors, due to it being busy another member of staff tried to keep my partner in minors despite showing signs of lung bruising, broken scapula, ribs and collar bone, the trauma consultant made sure we were put into majors. Upon arrival in majors I noticed blood splatter in and around the sink and on the ceiling tiles of the neighbouring bay, also cannula caps and other various plastic bits on the floor under the trolley. The equipment tray used was left on the side. It was almost 40minutes before any pain relief was administered, which was done after multiple requests. After hours spent in trauma we were given very limited information on what was wrong and moved to another ward around the corner for what we were told was discharge. None of the staff here were told about the discharge or the out patient appointment my partner required so we sat for a further hour whilst the staff checked what was going on. During this time my partner used a toilet bottle and when I tried handing it to the HCA she was busy and I was told it would be collected shortly, a lady then came and offered a hot drink to my partner which he accepted, this lady then proceeded to put his drink down right next to his used toilet bottle. We finally got discharged and had to return for a fracture clinic appointment which was at 9:10am when we saw the consultant he asked if my partner had stayed in and what was the problem as notes were missing, we were then sent for more xrays and told he needed surgery and sent to wait for swabs, we ended up sat waiting for over 2hrs just for swabs so by the time we left the car park cost us over £7 and a full day for a fracture appointment. Surgery was decided on as the best option so we were told to attend for an elective today at 11:30, upon arrival we checked in and was told to wait in a waiting room, which we did, another 90minutes we sat there until I asked what was going on, we had to wait for someone to be discharged before a bed was available, first time i've come across this procedure for a day case surgery. Whilst waiting they started to serve food right outside the door where my nil by mouth partner was sat, the server proceeding to shout out his entire menu to a colleague down the hall which was hard for someone starving to hear. We are now at 4pm and he still hasn't been seen by the anaesthetist or showing any signs of going in for his surgery.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that this was such a poor experience for your partner. I have shared your comments with the management teams of the areas concerned including our infection prevention department.

I hope that your partners surgery went well and he is now on the road to recovery.

Kind Regards

Angela Grocott

Head of Patient Experience
