"Birth of my Daughter on Hazel ward"

I was induced in April and gave birth to my daughter about 14hrs later  My daughter was delivered with no pain medication other than gas and air by a midwife called Amy who was just incredible. Words cannot describe how comfortable and in control she made me feel. I had two 2nd degree tears which she spent about 2hrs stitching up and I healed perfectly. Lucy also provided incredible postpartum care after I haemorrhaged due to retained placenta. An incredibly skilled doctor (can't remember her name!) manually extracted the clots and the placenta from my uterus with her own hands, so quickly that even though it was painful I was so happy and grateful that she had done it.

Sadly one midwife really let Hazel ward down; they provided the checks for my daughter before we were able to be discharged. I found them rude, brash, patronising and downright frightening for two young brand new parents. They scolded and humiliated my husband and I when I admitted I hadn't checked if my daughter had been for a wee in her nappy because each time I'd changed it it has been a dirty nappy, not just wet. Left me in tears, and my husband and I felt angry and embarrassed. When my husband asked what next steps were and if there was anything to be worried about she scolded him again for asking her questions because she wasn't providing our care, she was just doing the physical checks on our daughter. Spoilt what was otherwise a fantastic birthing and postpartum experience.

To add - I am autistic and this is clearly documented at the top of my hospital notes. It clearly says I may find some things hard to understand and need more care and support, and that I am very sensitive to being spoken to in certain ways. The member of staff was the only person who not only completely ignored this but did exactly what is harmful to me considering my autistic spectrum condition.
