"Ultrasound scan"

About: Tameside General Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as a service user),

I underwent a transvaginal ultrasound scan recently at Tameside Hospital. As you can imagine, this type of investigation is quite embarrassing but throughout the procedure itself, I was treated with professionalism and respect.

The worst part was actually after the examination, I had to ask for something to freshen up with before getting dressed.  The healthcare assistant looked a little surprised by my request before handing me some paper towel and stating this is all we have.  This really should be a basic consideration for anyone undergoing a gynaecological or intimate examination.  Moist wipes/tissues should be available and offered routinely without adding to patients’ discomfort and embarrassment by having to ask.

Good afternoon Emma, I have shared your feedback with our Director for Nursing and Integrated Governance, Pete Weller and he has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Good afternoon Emma,

thanks for your post and for your feedback about your experience of our services. I appreciate your comments that any intimate examination can be a daunting prospect for our patients and I am keen in my role as Director of Nursing that all steps possible are taken to make patients feel as comfortable as possible.

Some enquiries have been made with the Team in the Radiology Department and I understand that both wet and dry towels are available for patients to use following investigations such as these. I am sorry that you were not offered this choice and the member of staff you spoke to was unaware of this. The Sister of the area has assured me that she will be discussing your feedback in a forthcoming team meeting to ensure that all patients are offered an appropriate choice where possible and I am sorry that this didn't happen for you.

If I can be of any further assistance or you wanted to talk about this in more detail, I can be contacted on 0161 922 6024.

thanks, Pete
