"Level of care"

About: University Hospital Monklands / General Medicine (Wards 2,10,12 and 17)

(as a relative),

Dad was in AMRU at Monklands hospital for 3 days and was unable to get up unassisted.  He was not given a bed bath or assisted with showering.  Rather than assist him, on his request to the toilet he was given a commode and given minimal assistance to get out of bed and use it. Soap, a cloth, water and towel were left on the bed table for him to see to himself.  With his limited mobility, the reason for the admission, he was unable to properly clean. On day 3 he was transferred to ward 16, haematology unwashed. When mum arrived at the ward and asked about the shower they did not have staff to assist. Mum, who is 74 had to shower dad.

Dad is keen to defend the staff who did not stop the whole time he was in their care. There was more work than staff to cope with demand.

When he was discharged at lunch time, he was told to pick up a prescription around 6pm. I went to the ward and after a 30 minute wait outside the ward it transpires there was no medication required.

Dear Loc2019,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on the Care Opinion platform. I am really sorry to read your feedback and equally really disappointed to learn that we didn't get it right for your dad whilst in our care in AMRU. I was really concerned to learn that your dad didn't have his personal needs attended to for 3 days and equally that bathing utensil's were left on a table for him to tend to himself. I appreciate that your dad may have wanted to be as independent as possible but equally, I would have expected the staff to encourage your dad at all opportunity and assist where required.

This is not the level of person centred care that I would expect to be delivered to any patient at UHM especially in a clinical area that I have professional nursing responsibility for. I would like to deeply apologies to your father for his experiences in our care and offer you and your mother an apology also for equally experiencing this during this time. I will be discussing this with the SCN in AMRU and I will ask for an understanding of our processes to avoid the same happening again.

Best wishes,

Gavin
