"Physio Yoga Class"

About: St Marks Hospital

I am currently attending the Physio Yoga class having had physio post a substantial operation. The therapist was excellent, He did a thorough assessment and started me off with some exercises. He referred me on to the yoga class which is proving to be of great benefit. The teacher is very knowledgeable and encouraging. She takes time to explain what she's doing and why and tells us how to make each exercise manageable in line with our own situation and problems. The class is small so she is constantly scanning us and assisting anyone who is having any issues. The only problem is the time taken to start treatment as I think both physio and any such class would be of much greater benefit if started earlier after an op. I know everyone is different so there couldn't be a one size fits all, but if an assessment for physio was carried out about 3 months after a major op Im sure many patients would make a better recovery more quickly - and lose less confidence as a result. Im certain such a service would save budget overall

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your posting and we are pleased that you were happy with your care and treatment at St marks Hospital. With regard to your point about reducing the delay for physiotherapy following an operation, I have been in touch with senior staff in order to obtain clarification. Its difficult to respond to this as it is dependent on when patients are allowed to start physiotherapy as per the post-op protocol and when our department receives a referral from the secondary care organisation who performed the operation. When we receive a referral, patients who are post-op are prioritised as urgent and we can offer an appointment within 10 working days.

If patients are not resident in Windsor Ascot and Maidenhead, we unfortunately do not have the contract for post op patients in Slough or Bracknell so we would not be able to accept a post-op referral within 3 months. However if patients are in Windsor Ascot and Maidenhead, they will generally be prioritised as urgent based on when we receive the referral, (i.e. seen in 10 working days), as long as it is appropriate for the particular surgery that has been performed.

I hope that this goes some way to clarifying the situation. If you would like to discuss your own situation in more detail, then please contact me directly. We will be able to explore this in more detail and provide you with a full response.

Yours Faithfully,

Trevor Lyalle
