"Visit to X-Ray Department"

About: Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I had an appointment at the X-Ray / MRI department at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. I travelled to the hospital nice and early in the hope of achieving a parking space and I am glad to say that I managed to find one for my motor vehicle. I arrived at the X-Ray / MRI department in good time for my appointment and signed in via the computer based check- in service as there were no admin clerks on duty in the office.

The X-Ray / MRI department was completely empty on my arrival, not one other member of the public was to be seen in the waiting room area. I thought this was a bit unusual as this area is normally hoaching with individuals waiting to be seen. I was taken quite quickly and went through the MRI scan process without any problems other than that of speech clarity. Whilst going through the MRI scan process I was aware of one of the staff speaking to me via the headphones. I could not always make out what was being said and this was due to the individual speaking far too close to the microphone which has an effect on the speech clarity when relaying a message to a patient. The rest of the process went very well indeed. I was pleased to see that I was able to keep on the majority of my clothing and footwear. I was also pleased to see that ear plugs and headphones are being used to reduce any noise problems from the scanner itself. It used to be the case that some music was played via the headphones which helped to allay any person's anxiety / fear issues during the whole process. During my process I did not hear any music and I merely kept quiet / still and stared at the tiles on the ceiling which was not very exciting. I also liked the fact that lockfast lockers are being used to house one's personal property in a bid to reduce / eliminate and petty theft of patients' personal belongings. I left the X-Ray / MRI department and was back at my motor vehicle in good time ready to travel home.

My only concerns about the injury to my left knee / leg was the fact that I injured my left knee back in February 2019 and I went to my GP in early March 2019 and it has now taken until August 2019 to get an MRI scan and then I have to wait on the results coming through. The NHS processes are very slow indeed and matters need to be speeded up so that persons like myself who have a debilitating left knee /leg issue can be properly and quickly dealt with which reduces the number of persons waiting to go through the various NHS processes.

The only health operation I have ever needed to have was having my tonsils taken out at the age of 7 years. One is always being told that there is a waiting list for various types of treatment due to backlogs of needy patients and the fact that persons are living longer. Today, on a Sunday, I saw no one waiting to be seen in the X-Ray / MRI waiting area other than myself. What I would like to know is the NHS still operating a 24 hour, 7 day service in order to reduce all the backlogs of persons waiting to get various treatments including operations ? As a former shift worker myself I used to get time off for only one weekend in four and the public service that I was employed in provided a 24 hour, 7 day service to the members of the general public. I should like to point out that I did not take up the time of the already busy staff within the Accident and Emergency Department of the Victoria Hospital in a bid to obtain a faster MRI appointment and a speedier outcome for my debilitating left leg/knee problem. If I had done then I might have had some form of operation by now and could have cast aside my recently purchased, folding walking stick.

Dear Hector 52,

Thank you for your feedback I will share this with the MRI team, it will be helpful to learn that the way they speak into the microphone can reduce the clarity of the sound.

The Radiology Department have appointments for examinations to extend the working day and at weekends. This makes the department look less busy when everything is running to time.

The new safety guidelines mean that both the earplugs and headphones are to be used, this means that the music is no longer available.

The MRI waiting time is currently not greater than 6 weeks, if you contact the Radiology department I would be more than happy to look into the delay from your GP visit to the appointment you received.

Hello Jeanette,

Thank you for your reply to my care opinion story. Would you be willing to provide me with your work e-mail address in order that I can advise you of the saga as to how it took so long to get to the MRI scan in August 2019 when I originally hurt my left knee / leg in February 2019.

I have to confess that I saw a Dr at the Whyteman's Brae Outpatients Department in July 2019 and he referred me for the MRI scan which I got in August which was pretty quick indeed. I was never referred for an MRI scan by my GP but I was referred by the GP for an X-Ray and a DVT scan which showed up nothing. If you would like to have the whole story including me paying for private physio because the NHS waiting list was so long then I am quite willing to send you a separate e-mail if you are willing to provide me with a work e-mail address.

In the meantime I have had to survive on ibuprofen, paracetamol, a knee support and a walking stick. I paid for the last three things myself and the ibuprofen comes via prescription. It was interesting to read about the reason you do not provide music via the headphones any more and I must admit that with the combined use of the ear plugs and the head phones I found that the noise from the scanner did not cause me any problems / concerns.

Kind Regards,

Hector 52.

Hello Hector 52,

I was concerned that your delay was on account of the Radiology department, in reading your reply I can see that there were other factors for this.

You've included things that the Physiotherapy team would benefit in reading so I will share this with that team also. I'm sorry to read that you needed to pay for private physiotherapy and other aids.

If there's anything else that you wish to discuss regarding Radiology I can be contacted via 01592 648103

Hi Jeanette,

Thanks for your information which is much appreciated. I am sorry that I ranted on a bit in my original story but it seems to have taken forever to get from seeing a GP, getting some medication, having privately paid physio, getting an X-Ray, getting a DVT test and then getting to see the Orthopaedic Surgical Doctor Lars Halford who then says that I need an MRI scan to find out the internal problem with my left knee / leg. I am now waiting to hear the results of my MRI scan and what is going to happen next. My wife and I are due to go on holiday in Spain on 1st November 2019 for two weeks but I might have to cancel that if I need to have an operation.

The last problem that I have with the Radiology / X-Ray department is the paperwork that was sent out in July to tell me about my MRI appointment in August. Included with the main appointment letter is an "MRI Patient Information Leaflet" which makes very good reading indeed. Please have a read of the first paragraph on the reverse of the leaflet / A4 form. It clearly states that you will give earplugs or headphones and play music whilst one is getting a scan. Due to a change in the health and safety rules you now provide both ear plugs and headphones, which is great by the way, and considerably cuts down any external noises from the "Siemens Healthineer" machine. Music is no longer provided which is probably a very good thing in that patients won't need or want to bounce about to the latest tunes instead of keeping very still so that the MRI scanner can do its job properly and capture all the required internal evidence within the body.

You might like to have a complete read of the paperwork being sent out by the booking clerks for your department to ensure that everything is accurate and make any alterations as you see fit. I think you will agree that it is good practice to send only accurate information to the members of the public who are going to be attending your department.

That is now the end of my latest story on "Care Opinion" and I should like to thank you for reading about all my woes.

Kind Regards,

Hector 52.
