Very pleased with all care related to surgery before and immediately after at the Borders General Hospital, Melrose, Scottish Borders.
Transference process from hospital ward to home could have been smoother . The day before I was due to be discharged I told the nurses in charge that at my pre-admission interview I had registered as wanting the Hospital To Home service that was available after major surgery. One nurse said they knew nothing about this and didn't know anything about this and may mean I had to stay over the weekend. I felt that they obviously weren't au fait with the idea of this service assisting in the emptying of hospital beds and that was what I was trying to assist with. I felt as though I was causing them extra work and made me feel very awkward and exhausted. This was such a pity as all put in place very quickly when co-ordinator got the message.
This Hospital To Home service is a trial evidently and answers a lot of the needs for people like myself (normally independent but very week, nervous about all the changes ) needing some support on getting home to those maybe more frail and requiring a little more in the way of personal support for a period up to six weeks. This should be passed on to say how they assisted me into being independent much quicker, not needing to constantly look for other forms of support including GP as well as the earlier discharge from hospital, lightening the squeeze on social work etc.
"I became independent much quicker"
