"Sent away with little information"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as a service user),

I was referred by GP with suspected appendicitis to ward 16 at Wishaw General. The nursing staff there are excellent and a credit to the NHS. I couldn't get scheduled for a CT scan that day so had to be admitted for an overnight. I was nil by mouth for 5 hours and explained that I have stomach acid problems the longer I don't eat the worse the pain is. The following morning the consultant agreed a CT scan should be organised and again nothing to eat or drink till after the scan. After 4 hours of waiting it transpired the Dr had only put the request in half an hour prior so by the time my scan was done I had nothing to eat from 9pm to 5 pm the following evening. I was admitted for a second night for an investigation from a different department.

Again the nurses on ward 18 are excellent. The CT scan and further investigation were inconclusive, a doctor came to discharge me in between snacks with very little information and took less than a minute to discuss everything. The nurse asked them to return to have a more in depth conversation as I was about to be discharged with pain and no further knowledge of any diagnosis or how to manage it. It is not pleasant when you are at your most vulnerable to be dismissed and sent away with little information and having to ask for pain relief to help manage the pain.

Dear Jellybean 23

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us about your recent experience.

I will be sure to feedback your compliments to the nursing team you have mentioned however, I am sorry that you did not receive the information you required and you were left fasting for a significant period of time.

We are currently in the process of reviewing our Fasting Guidelines and this will hopefully prevent issue like this in the future.

In relation to the lack of information you received it would be helpful if you could contact our patient affairs team on 01698 366 558 to provide a little more information around this to ensure we can take your concerns forward and look to how we can do things better in the future.

Alternatively you can email: PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Kind Regards

Kim Brown
