"Measles"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

In late July my daughter became ill with what we thought was a cold and cough, however, in the early evening she developed a rash and high temperature and felt awful. We phoned 111 who told us to go to the nearest A&E. On arrival the triage service recognised straight away how poorly she was and we were seen immediately. They assessed her for meningitis and sepsis, took blood and put her on a drip. We were given antibiotics for her chest, because the Dr said the bloods showed she was fighting an infection and possibly had scarlet fever, and sent home. By the next morning my daughter was worse and the rash had intensified and it occurred to me that it might be measles. Following a check of the NHS website and a conversation with the GP it was decided it was in fact measles.  On reflection it occurred to me that going to A&E probably wasn't the best advice and I was surprised that the Dr in A&E didn't think of measles, considering the NHS website says there is an epidemic at the moment. I did phone Musgrove Park Hospital A&E to inform them that it was measles the following day. All the staff we met were really lovely and obviously very busy but I thought I should give feedback so that staff can be made aware of the symptoms.

Dear Meales Mum

I hope your daughter is on the mend

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and I'm glad our staff were lovely.

Many illnesses present initially in similar ways with children and I would like to be able to look at this to see if we need to do some more education with the Clinician involved, or whether it was not possible to make a diagnosis of measles at that time. Without your consent and the notes from the attendance I cannot look at what education is needed.

If you could contact us directly via PALS PALS@tst.nhs.uk or contact Karen Tyler of Myself directly through switch board so that we can look into this further.

Thank you

Louise

Thank you for contacting us.

The DR who saw your daughter was a very experienced GP so I think would have considered measles. However we have added to our safety brief about the increase of measles recently as a reminder to clinicians to consider this diagnosis. I hope your daughter is continuing to recover well.

Regards

Louise
