"If your pregnant - Avoid this Hospital"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / Maternity care

My daughter went to the hospital at 20 weeks pregnant with "spotting" of blood, having had 2 previous miscarriages she was rightly very upset and concerned. This did not appear to matter to the staff on duty she was merely given a pad to wear and told to wait in the corridor no explanation of what was going to happen ( she's a young first time mother) after 2 hours of waiting my wife went to find out what was happening and was told she would be seen in a minute, after waiting my daughter and wife were taken into another room to do some more waiting.

8 hours later and still not seen a doctor. Its bad enough that we have to travel almost 20 miles to get to the hospital, but having had experience of other hospitals your hospital leaves a lot to be desired, if its a teaching hospital I suggest that you put effective communication on the agenda and not just for your students. I will remain anonymous but not because I'm afraid of discussing it with you, but my daughter and wife don't like to complain. Thanks for making my daughters stress worst

Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry to hear that your daughter had such a poor experience at our hospital. We have been exceptionally busy recently, however the delay in your daughter seeing a medical doctor 8 hours is particularly excessive. Without specific details I don't know if she saw a midwife who would have assessed and triaged her according to priority and acuity on that particular day.

I have shared your experience with the lead for Women's services and she has asked me to relay her apologies also. She has reiterated that, regardless of how busy the unit is, we do not accept that any member of staff would demonstrate an uncaring attitude and she entirely agrees that women should always be informed as to the potential times of any expected delays. She is attending a directorate risk management meeting this afternoon and will highlight the necessity of effective and caring responsiveness to women and their families

If your daughter would like to discuss her experience in person please ask her to email me directly and I will coordinate this. My email address is: angela.grocott@uhnm.nhs.uk

Kind Regards

Angela Grocott
