I went for a cervical examination with a gynaecologist who had a 'one size fits all approach' in terms of speculums. The doctor told me (a person who has never given birth) that the female body is made to birth a 9lb or even 10lb baby and decided to use a piece of equipment that caused me severe pain and blamed me for my failure to relax (I am not pregnant and therfore see this as somewhat presumptuous as well as demeaning.) This individual made me incredibly uncomfortable and has made me reluctant to ever visit a gyneaologist again which is incredibly concerning. I was in tears after my appointment and still in great discomfort. I would not recommend this ward to any woman who does not enjoy being belittled or being put through unnecessary pain for the sake of a very outdated approach to cervical examination. I'm embarrassed and thoroughly shaken by my treatment. If you are in need of an intimate exam, go elsewhere. It is no longer a mystery to me as to why so many women do not book their smear tests.
