Following on from a bowel operation, I had been anticipating an overnight stay on  Montacute ward.  Instead ended up staying in the surgery admissions lounge (SAL) day case discharge ward.

Okay there must of been a reason, others needing more support from the main ward overnight than me!

The issues I would like to highlight are related to privacy:

1.   The surgery admissions lounge (SAL) day case discharge ward has one toilet which was at the end of my bed, but no showering facilities.

2.  Showering facilities were in the main waiting area and were also the only toilet for people in this area.  Not great to have to walk to this having repeatedly asked for towels.

3.  The doors to the  day case discharge ward were open constantly, we all know human nature is to have a good look in...

4.  The  day case discharge ward was used as a corridor with staff walking through.  Don't know where it went to but a folding bike was tracked through...

Finally, the bed I was in was right next to the nurses station.  There were only two of us on the ward, I felt I knew more about the other patient, than I did about me.

As the matron who oversees the placing of patients in surgery I am very sorry to hear about your experience. As you suggest there are reasons why we are currently having to use SALs for our inpatients and it is never an option taken lightly. The main reason is to enable us to continue operating whilst the Jubilee wards undergo some urgent pipeworks which entails closing 24 beds at a time.

Thank you for so clearly identifying the issues which you have encountered. I will see where we can improve the situation for the patients who are taken there for periods of care.
