"I don't think we could have asked for any better care"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I went in to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary maternity hospital in July 2019 as I was in labour. This was my first baby so I did not know which symptoms were normal. As a result I thought my nausea and dizziness were normal labour symptoms, however, the midwives quickly realised by blood pressure was dropping due to bleeding, and my baby's heart rate was dropping. This put me from the green to the red pathway and both myself and baby were monitored very closely by multiple staff. I felt like we received such excellent care and attention on what I could tell was a very busy day. To cut a long story short, it all became a bit of an emergency and I had to have an epidural, episiotomy and forceps delivery to get baby out quickly. The specialists admitted that they did not have time to explain everything fully as baby was in distress but I fully understood what was happening and consented to all that was advised. They delivered my baby and he is a very healthy boy. Since his birth I have been asked multiple times if I have any questions or concerns about his birth. I don't think we could have asked for any better care. Thanks to all involved. If it wasn't for their excellent care I may not have my baby boy with me today.

Dear DHam,

Firstly let me congratulate you on the birth of your son, and how grateful we are that you have taken the time to provide such lovely feedback.

It is very reassuring to me as a manager that the staff, although busy have been alert to your needs and monitored you very closely when your care requirements increased.

Sometimes we do have to work very quickly especially in emergency situations and as you pointed out it can be very difficult when time is of the essence to explain everything fully but the fact that you understood exactly what was going on and able to consent is a testament to the staff involved.

May I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind Regards

Liz
