"Hospital Cleanliness"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I recently spent time in Cedar Ward, Northampton General Hospital. Nursing staff were excellent and very attentive.

However I do not know if any cleaning staff were attached to that part of the ward.

A Doctor took some blood from me about lunchtime and I could see a few droplets fall to the floor from the syringe. When I was allowed up the following day about lunchtime the blood was still on the floor. No-one had come to clean and in fact for the 24hrs I spent in that ward, fully awake, I don't think I saw any cleaning staff at all.

I did manage to catch the eye of someone who eventually just wiped up the dried-in blood!

Surely in this day of MRSA etc, cleanliness should be of the highest importance especially in a surgical ward. I thought that Infection Control was high priority in hospitals these days.

I would also advise anyone who has to spend any length of time at NGH to provide their own meals etc. I am anything but a fussy eater but what was served to me (fish, roast potatoes) looked as though it had been laying around for about a month and in fact I was frightened to eat it.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your time on Collingtree Ward. We’re glad you liked the nursing staff. You are right, we do indeed take cleanliness very seriously and in fact our MRSA infection rate is below average - so your comment has been passed on to the ward staff. They have asked me to convey their concerns regarding the blood spillage. Each ward has a daily cleaning schedule which is checked. The staff appreciate your telling someone about the spillage and that it was dealt with promptly.

Finally our food. We try really hard with this so its interesting to know that we still that we did not manage to get it right for you – please let us know if it happens again. Your response has been taken to our catering manager and we will be reviewing the process by which patients order their food.
