I have had breast cancer twice both times it was caught early. The first time by a routine scan. The second time I went to my GP because I was concerned about changes in my skin. My GP was on the ball and sent me for a check up at hospital. Although that breast was ok, I was found to have a small lump in the other breast. After an operation and radiotherapy I feel I have made a good recovery.
My husband was also diagnosed with bowel cancer after he found spots of blood on his underpants and I went straight to GP although he had to have a colostomy bag fitter he made an excellent recovery.
We both feel that more should be done to encourage people to seek early help. We both were part of a group run by staff and nurses at the Northern General Hospital called the ABC. Group, where we went out and spoke to members of the public and tried to get them to seek early medical advice if they had a problem. Unfortunately this group had to close as the NHS wouldn't cover funding. We feel more should be done to promote early detection.
