I had my first baby in july last year, induced at 37 weeks. She was born just before midnight, i was cut after a fairly traumatic experience towards the end of the labour, may i say that the whole delivery was dealt with brilliantly and the staff were fantastic. But this isnt the issue. The after care, in my opinion was appalling to say the least, once she was out and sorted i was just left to it, i had expressed my desire to breast feed but was really struggling, especially in the first hour, ans all they kept saying was "come on shes hungry" which made me feel terrible, it took atleast 45 minutes for someone to actually show me and help me to do it, it doesnt just happen. At just after 3am a nurse marched in to the delivery room to take me to the ward and simply declared "say goodbye to daddy", they wouldnt even allow him down to the ward to help me get settled. He had no means of transport home at this time and a taxi at that time would have been very expensive so he slept downstairs in the waiting area, may i point out that we were told he was allowed to stay otherwise we would have organised a means of transport. Baring in mind how tired, sore, emotional and anxious i was, and i assume most mums feel this way after giving birth having their significant other there to help is indeed needed. I was too afraid to go to the toilet because i would have to leave her on the ward alone. When i mentioned what had happened the next day to a few nurses they all said they would have let him stay given the time. Then throughout the day nurses and cleaners would open my curtains leaving them open whilst i was trying to breast feed not even looking at me or acknowledging me just chatting away to each other even when i asked for them to remain closed. Overall my first experience giving birth was very disappointing and after care needs to be looked at.
