"GREAT STAFF APART FROM A COUPLE OF BAD EGGS"

About: Broomfield Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I fell down the stairs on 3rd April, I shattered and dislocated my ankle.

I was orginaly put on Notley Ward and all the staff were amazing even down to the meal staff - couldn't fault them. Then I went onto John Ray Ward - no smiles, no handover, just shoved in a room on my own. I became in pain quite quickly (as I hadn't had an operation yet to pin back everything) so I rang for some morphine. I was told I had to wait that medicine rounds were not for another 2 hours, I said I couldn't wait 2 hrs and was ignored.

I rang again and got told the same thing.

He finally came in 1.5 hrs later with some morphine and by then I was crying - I think he was very shocked and I must admit he didn't do it again in my time there but I did find the night staff showed little to no compassion at all for patients.

So much so I asked to talk to the ward manager he didn't respond either.

The Day staff (all of them) were amazing.

But the night staff made you feel like you were a burden.

I couldn't get out of bed and needed a bed pan (consultants wishes) and in the evening was made to feel so bad asking - I was told whats wrong with your legs? Why cant you walk? And one woman who I can name if someone would contact me made me feel so small and pathetic that I cried - she wouldn't talk to me huffed at me and when she wheeled me past reception (there were closer toilets I think she wanted to humiliate me) I saw her phone open a packet of crisps on the side - I'd obviously interrupted her Facebook time on her phone - I thought she might have been Bank staff but was told afterwards she was full time.

What I ended up doing was not asking in the night for the bedpan or to go to the toilet as they made me feel so bad.

Apart from those people everyone else was AMAZING! It was a pretty scary time and I was on my own as family aren't close and the day staff were so lovely - I felt like part of the family.

I wish that they would sort out the night staff - for the vunerable older people it cant be nice.
