"Exceptional care"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

While A&E was a bit of a nightmare on Friday afternoon and the receptionist decided that the increasing cellulitis in my hand and arm from a dog bite was a minor rather than a major so no triage, once I saw the Advanced Nurse Practitioner my treatment progressed. Not quickly as there were no beds and I needed IV antibiotics, but both she and junior doctor were extremely caring going an extra mile to help me. I had a canular placed in A&E so that I could receive the first dose of antibiotics IV and the junior doctor took me to a quiet room in order to write up my long list of medications so that it was ready for the ward. The Orthopaedic team came down to A&E and assessed me, and the two doctors were very caring. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner, took me there herself as the ward was too busy to release a member of staff).

Once on the ward the Junior Sister and St Nurse assessed and admitted me. All the staff on Neustadt-Welton were caring and so kind. I was always treated with respect. All the staff were caring and lovely, and the night nurse re-sited my canula twice on consecutive so carefully that I hardly noticed.. NA's all lovely. Doctors gave an excellent service. I could not have asked for better care. You just need to sort out A&E. Receptionists should not be making clinical decisions, and I had a GP letter that I handed over which told them that I needed urgent care. Thank you,

Lincoln County Hospital.

Whilst it would appear that the receptionist is making the decision and telling the patient the course of action that is being taken, there is a junior sister sat at the side of the receptionist that listens as the patient is booking in and asks any relevant questions and then the sister tells the receptionist where the patient is being streamed within the department and the receptionist relays this to the patient.

If for any reason the junior sister is not present at the desk, the receptionist does not make any clinical decisions, everything goes through triage until the junior sister returns and the staff nurse makes the clinical decision.

As this was classed as a minor injury, no triage would take place as all minor injuries are streamed directly to minors unless requiring pain relief.
