"Left ashamed and embarrassed"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

I was recently taken to Glasgow royal infirmary as I had self harmed. I had experienced poor mental health that day. After getting taken to a cubicle I was left to wait by myself for a significant time period before being seen by a doctor. On more than 1 occasion I was accused of self harming while I was there and making my wounds worse with hospital equipment.  The doctor refused to believe I was telling the truth. I had already been searched before presenting at the A& E department. I was then left to wait on my own for another significant time where I was becoming more and more distressed with just my own thoughts for company. I have a history of self harm and have found this whole situation extremely traumatic.

Dear Fowlerslife,

I was sorry to read of your recent experience following your attendance at the A&E Department of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. This must have been a very difficult time for you and I apologise for our failings which clearly served to make the experience even more traumatic for you.

I will raise details of your experience with the A/E team and would like to thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns with us.

Yours sincerely,

John Stuart

Chief Nurse.
