"Palliative care and support"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Palliative Care Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Renal Medicine (Kidney) Community Services in Grampian

(as a relative),

My granda was diagnosed with terminal cancer as an inpatient in ward 108.  He had been a patient there over many years as he had a kidney transplant 22 years ago, so they knew him well. His dying wish was to be at home and the staff did everything in their power to facilitate this. It wasn’t an easy process but they kept us updated every day.

Once he was at home the out of hours nurses sat with him nearly every night. As we are a very small family we struggled being there day and night so when they stepped in and helped with the nights it allowed us to spend quality time with him during the day. We will never forget the kindness shown to us.

He passed away peacefully in his own home last week and we can’t thank the ward and out of hours nurses enough.

The NHS is absolutely amazing! We couldn’t have done it without everyone.

Dear Mini88

Many thanks for sharing your story re the care that your granda received whilst he was in ward 108 and the person centred approach to ensure that his wishes were achieved.

This must have been such a difficult time for you as a family and so pleased to read that the staff did everything that they could to ensure that he was able to be at home. The staff will be pleased to read how their care impacted both your granda and his family.

Communication is such an important part of patient care and I am pleased that you were kept updated by the staff throughout his stay and during his discharge process.

Appreciating that this will be a difficult and emotional time for you following your granda's death but glad that the staff had such an impact and allowed you as much time as possible to spend with him in his last few days.

With best wishes to you and your family

Fiona
