"Team should be applauded for a fantastic service"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Outpatients Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT)

(as the patient),

I suffered a serious infection post heart surgery. I had two separate admissions to hospital to oreceive IV antibiotics to stop the infection and the second time I was to receive the antibiotics for weeks. I have children who were doing important exams at the time, dogs who were pining for me and a hubby left trying to work and get his head round housework, cooking and parenting all on his own. The prospect of being kept in hospital a further 6weeks of treatment was devastating. OPAT service was discussed with me. I could be discharged from the hospital and then return everyday as a day medicine patient to get the antibiotic. OPAT was the bespoke service that provided this.

The staff running the service were very professional , efficient and were always happy at their work. I trusted them to look after me and act as an go between to my consultant. I had some very difficult side effects from the treatment but the team helped with them. The regular weekday team of Louise, Lindsey and Isobel and the Day Medicine staff at the weekends were all lovely and really helped the 6 weeks to by smoothly. It was difficult going in everyday but it was much better than having to stay in hospital all that time. The team should be applauded for a fantastic service. They made me feel safe and have now got me free from my PICC line and onto oral medicine  💊🍾

Hi Doubledykes

Glad to hear your health has improved and you are now on oral anti-biotics.

Thanks for taking the time to feedback your experience of the OPAT service in Forth Valley and I am glad it was a very positive one. OPAT is a fairly new service to FVRH and the value this has for patients is well described in you post, it allows patients who are essentially clinically well to return to there home where they can continue with their often busy lives but continue with the treatment they need.

The 3 nurses you mentioned take great pride in their work and yes they do enjoy it as do the day medicine staff who provide the weekend service.

I will be sure to share this with all involved.

Many thanks

Gayle
