"Delayed follow up after possible stroke"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as the patient),

I suffered query stroke. I was taken to RAH in paisley, Scotland and then transferred to Queen Elizabeth in Glasgow where I was thrombolised and had CT scan overnight, I was then given MRI scan the following day and then discharged that same day.

Consultant stated that results of scans were inconclusive and follow up would be arranged at my local hospital ( Crosshouse, Kilmarnock ). I had to attend my GP as I had no update or appointments from Crosshouse, I was then given appointment with stroke consultant approximately 8 weeks after possible stroke.

They stated results were inconclusive from previous scans and stated that I would be discharged from their care but would arrange further tests and appointment with stroke rehabilitation nurse just in case and if any came back with irregular results they would arrange to see me again.

I attended stroke rehabilitation nurse appointment in May 2019 and was told that as no further tests had yet been done it was difficult to discuss care and gave me a further appointment for September. I attended Crosshouse for Doppler test also in May, I received letter a few weeks later stating test came back clear.

I was to attend Crosshouse in July for heart Echo and  72 hour heart monitor, This was cancelled two weeks before and rescheduled.

I have waited five months for these tests to be done.

I never attended the appointments in July as I was still on holiday unable to get home and these appointments have since been cancelled by myself as these tests were done on holiday in hospital.

Unfortunately myself and husband were stranded on holiday for an extra week until insurance was sorted out, the shock that we experienced when told by insurance company that we were not covered is indescribable and the reason given was that I am still awaiting 2 further tests. This has left us approximately £5000 out of pocket.

I believe this is all due to the 5 months I have waited to have these tests to be carried out. As far as I was led to believe I had a possible stroke in February which is a serious medical condition and I feel that the time lapsed to confirm or rule out this stroke is totally unacceptable.

I feel extremely let down and disappointment in the NHS.

Finally if I had had all tests I feel I should have had routinely for a stroke this may have been ruled out and a possible different diagnosis could have been made ( same explanation given by doctor on holiday) and I would have been treated for this and given appropriate medication( I am currently on medication given for stroke) and the same thing possibly would not have happened while I was on holiday.

I feel that if NHS had done what they should have done and in a timely manner possibly I would have not taken ill with same previous symptoms, my holiday would not have been ruined,I  would not have been stranded abroad for a week and the insurance would have paid out.

I would appreciate an explanation for the lack of care I have received.
