About: Southmead Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My daughter has a sort of kidney stone, she was given two sessions of laser treatment which was unsuccessful.

Earlier this year she went in for an operation to remove the stone, which again was unsuccessful and a temporary stent was fitted.

Then she had an appointment for 07.30 in the morning to remove the stone which means she stopped eating and drinking at 22.00 the following evening.

Throughout that day she kept asking the nursing staff how long it would be before it was her turn.

At 15.30 that afternoon she was feeling extremely unwell and disorientated through 17 hours without food or water.

This was getting serious she was the last person in the waiting room. The staff looked concerned and explained she was not on their list but they would put her on a drip to re-hydrate her and do the operation now. By now my daughter was panicking and was not in a fit state to operate on, they agreed and assured her she would be first on the list next time and it would be carried out within the next two weeks.

It is now nearly six weeks later and after numerous daily calls to the urology department and two calls to the NHS complaints department still no appointment.

She is in absolute agony and urinating blood and taking so many painkillers and antibiotics for severe infection. Her GP will only give her 5 more days of drugs which now have only a mild effect on the pain. What more can I do?

It breaks my heart to see her in so much pain. With the NHS failing her and her GP unable to do anything I am left with trying to find some pain relief online as I feel its my only option.

I am sorry to hear that your daughter has had such a poor experience when she attended for her operation to remove a kidney stone. I can appreciate this must have been very upsetting, and to add to your distress you have not received any communication as to when the procedure will now go ahead.

Please be assured that your daughter’s case has now been brought to the attention of her consultant who I understand has arranged for a date to be allocated for her procedure.

The Advice and Complaints team along with the Urology department are investigating your daughter's experience.
