"Visit to A and E - why?"

About: Royal Derby Hospital / Emergency department

I went to A and E today at approx 2.50 as I had been struggling with extreme knee pain. This was so bad I did not know what to do for it I had been for a private physio session in case it was muscular taken pain killers and tried everything I could to alleviate the pain. I also had a red patch on my foot which may have been connected. I was advised that the issue was not an a and e problem by the triage nurse and referred to Primary care. I was seen by doctor after some time which I Expected as there are significant pressures in any such department and staff have a very hard job. The reason for my comments are that the doctor I saw did not introduce himself said he worked in Burton. I was advised I needed an x ray but that I should return home see my gp on Monday I questioned this as I had come to A abd E as I was in so much pain and would have waited if I could. His response was as he worked in Burton if he ordered an X-ray it would go to him and as he didn’t work in Derby wouldn’t be able to follow it up with me!! What utter nonsense could I not have had an X-ray and then either waited or received a phone call from him. I was given painkillers which I do appreciate but what a waste of my wait hospital time with no resolution at all to my painful condition. I did not go there lightly it’s not how you want to spend a Saturday afternoon. I feel let down and passed on I have to now try and get an appointment with my gp request an X-ray and wait for some outcome. it is an accident and emergency service and I really did not go there to add to pressures . Staff are excellent generally and I have the upmost respect for them all but I am disappointed with this particular doctor as I now have to repeat the whole issue and remain in pain. The likehood is I’ll have to come back to the hospital anyway next week.
