"Didn’t explain procedure before, during or after"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32)

(as a service user),

Had an appointment eventually, arrived terrified, shaking and totally embarrased. Was made bad enough when realised it was a male consultant. He didn’t explain what he was going to do, the nurse had to interfere on my behalf when I got confused and I remember saying to her ‘I’m not psychic’ when he was asking me to get changed and I didn’t understand why I needed to.

He didn’t ask me any questions other than confirming reason for referral from gp and said ‘we’ll see about getting rid of that’ (not an explanation). Never feltvreassured or knew what was happening at any point. I only had some clue because I’d looked online.

Thought he’d explain during procedure- nope and I was too scared to ask. Uncomfortable procedure and afterwards when I was trying to ask just kept saying it will be fine and dismissing me. Didn’t discuss aftercare at all and just said would be send to histology (good thing I knew what this was- didn’t explain), ran out of room just about in tears, in shock and angry, nurse came out and handed me a pad ‘in case of spotting’. Used public transport to get home- bleeding a fair bit (which had’t been explained) and had bad cramps for 3/4 days. Didn’t know when to expect results, how and spend ages looking up after effects online.

I was left so angry and shocked at the poor communication which I might have been able to challenge if I wasn’t so scared and in a vulnerable position that I made a formal complaint- the response was basically ‘that’s not what he or his notes say’. I would never complain without very strong grounds, I hope this doesn't happen to any other patient. The response was basically that I was lying- why would I? Never want to see another dr again, especially a male who can’t explain anything when you need reassurance and clarity, am so angry about this, but nobody cares because he’s a dr and he’s written it down in a computer.
