Make sure you get a private room as the shared bathrooms are freezing cold , everybody can hear all your conversations, with your baby , partner and other family member on the main ward. I was on the main ward for four days and regret not asking for a private room after having to listen to the staff complaining about patients continually (funny enough they complained about the patients in the private rooms and mothers not being able to breastfeed ) I got uninvited and sarcastic advice from another mother in the bed opposite me whilst my curtains were drawn. I was lucky I got to keep my curtains closed the whole time I was there, however I’ve heard that the curtains can get opened everyday by some staff. The food was lovely surprisingly enough. My whole experience was not a good one on the ward , there seemed to be a lot of unpleasantness going around, I couldn’t wait to get home. The staff liked to shout goodbye to each other even on the night shift , when mothers and babies were trying to sleep. There seems to be a lot of pressure going around on breastfeeding , however not all mothers can breastfeed straight away especially after an emergency C section. I was made to feel guilty and when I did get a little milk out I asked about nipple shields when I heard someone else asking about them in another bed ,however when I asked the nursing assistant she bluntly told me that 1, you have to pay for them there not free ? .....ok I said fine I wasn’t told that ,can you tell me about them and where do I get them ?? Her response was that you got them at a chemist and when you get them I will show you how to use them!! ( very unfriendly ,she seemed very angry that I even asked) I was leaving the next day thank god. The midwifes, doctors etc are really let down by a few bad eggs. I would NOT go back to Salisbury Maternity unit for another birth I would rather go to Winchester maternity unit instead.
