About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

My husband had an episode of ‘lost time’ it was very frightening for him we did not know what was happening. After going to an exercise class he returned home and couldn’t remember how he had driven home or what he had had for breakfast or lunch that day. He knew who I was and his speech was not impaired. I asked him to stick out his tongue, smile, raise his arms above his head, squeeze my hands and close his eyes and touch his nose. I was concerned he was having a stroke. I decided to give him a diralyte drink incase his salt level was down and I rang 111 within and hour he was coming out of the episode and started to remember things. The person at 111 arranged for the GP to call and we saw the GP the next morning who referred us to the TIA clinic at the LRI. We got an appointment the next day. The staff at the clinic couldn’t have been more professional, helpful and caring. My husband had his blood pressure checked, his heart, his carotid artery, bloods taken and an MRI of his head. We were sent off to various locations for these procedures and then went back to the TIA clinic everything was seamless. He saw the consultant twice during this time who was very knowledgeable, kind and professional. We came away feeling extremely fortunate and thankful to all the staff who give there all every day to help us. Our our generation is so fortunate, In my parents time the many villages used to have an Infirmary Parades with floats to raise money for the LRI, people used to raise money to sponsor a bed in a ward. Pre 1948 it cost my Dad 3 weeks wages to pay for an ambulance to call. We must treasure and support our health service and the staff, our experience today made me feel humble to be able to receive such wonderful care without the financial worry that so many others go through overseas, thankfully my husband should have a full recovery.
