Following an xray my GP referred me to Physio Direct. A telephone assessment service. I was doubtful from the get go because physio is by its nature a hands on skill based on knowledge and the subjective symptoms & health of the patient. Nevertheless, what could I do? So I phoned and spoke with a pleasant lady. I explained what had been going on, many things but primarily my left hip keeps giving way. I asked if my existing condition of hypermobility syndrome/EDS could be a cause as my knee also slips out and my joints are by nature of the condition unstable, due to the laxity of tendons, ligaments. She said no because (it was something like) hypermobility isn't to do with connective tissue, or connective tissue doesn't cause joint instability. Well... call it a learning opportunity if you like but that is exactly why having hypermobility syndrome causes lax joints - the collagen is faulty. There is a brilliant physio at Southend hospital specialising in this condition who I would far prefer to see... in person. But I clearly wasn't going to make my point so I agreed after further questions to try the exercises. My second issue is, how do I know I am doing them right and not causing further issues if I am doing them wrong? This applies to anyone of course. Call me cynical but a decision made by a physio on someone they've never set eyes on is going to be questionably accurate and demonstrating correct exercising impossible. I can see problems ahead with this service as the risk of patients having further damage and injury. I will be taking this up with physio direct.
