"Life-changing surgery"

About: Glasgow Dental Hospital and School / Dental Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General medicine (Wards 5d) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Oral Surgery & Medicine ( Wards 63) Scottish Ambulance Service

(as the patient),

In 2017 I had a serious bicycle accident, hitting a pothole and smashing my face. All I really remember is being revived by a friendly paramedic who had even taken time to load my bike onto the ambulance. I was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Hospital and found to have broken both jaws, my nose, an eye socket and lost a number of teeth. I also had a bleed on my brain and damaged the hyoid bone in my neck.

I spent some time being cared for in the hospital's High Dependency Unit - the staff there were fantastic. After consultation with the Maxillofacial team (Mr Holland and his colleagues), an operation was quickly arranged to repair my jaw and eye socket. The results of this surgery were astonishing, given the condition I was in beforehand. After a remarkably short recovery time there is no visible trace of the injuries and I suffered no long-term effects.

After being discharged from Maxillofacial I was then referred to Mrs Burns at the Glasgow Dental Hospital. I had lost four lower front teeth and so arrangements were made to have implants fitted. The process was made more complicated because of a titanium plate that had been fitted during the jaw surgery, so this meant a return to the Queen Elizabeth for further operation to have part of this plate removed to allow space for the implants. To make this more efficient it was arranged for the implants to be fitted by Mrs Burns during the same operation. I'm was extremely thankful for this convenience.

I cannot thank Mr Holland and Mrs Burns, their teams and everyone else involved in my care enough. My description above doesn't begin to capture the effort and time that has been spent by these professionals to provide such a massive improvement to the quality of my life. From the initial treatment received after the accident all the way through to the restorative surgery and fitting of the implants, the care I have received has been nothing short of outstanding.

Many thanks again!

Dear veloweegie,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. It sounds like you have had a very challenging journey that I imagine was really quite painful a lot of the time. I am so sorry to read that this happened to you. It is incredible the damage that can be caused due to a pothole. I think the incredible thing about your story is that it has clearly gone on for a long long time and to have received the kind of care you talk about for so long is really wonderful to read.

I am really pleased that our crew and the staff of the wider NHS Scotland have left such a positive impression and I would like to wish you all the very best in your continued recovery.

Kind Regards

Alan
